Two new studies point to a potent weapon in the fight
against cancer: flax, a crop used in ancient Egypt not
only for making clothing and fishnets but also for medicinal
purposes. The most recent study, conducted by the University
of Toronto and published in the November 8, 2002 issue
of Cancer Letters, showed that the addition of flaxseeds
to the diet can slow the growth of human breast tumors.
An earlier study, conducted at Duke University Medical
Center and published in the July 2001 issue of Urology,
showed a similar effect on prostate tumors. Maybe Hippocrates,
who prescribed flax as a cure for abdominal ailments 2,400
years ago, was onto some good flax facts!
